JOB DESCRIPTION: ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PRINCIPAL (K-6)
Qualifications:
- A valid state certificate to practice as a school principal.
- A minimum of three years’ experience in public school administration and supervision.
- A minimum of two years’ successful experience as a classroom teacher.
Reports to: Superintendent of Education
Supervises: All personnel serving in assigned school
Job Goal: To provide leadership and supervision through administrative skills so as to promote the educational development of each student
Duties and Responsibilities:
- To provide a positive school climate that is conductive to teaching and learning—a facility that is attractive, business-like and safe.
- To promote high expectations for student achievement and staff performance.
- To provide instructional leadership for staff and students.
- To monitor the instructional program and make appropriate changes to increase school effectiveness.
- To provide a program that insures an orderly transition from elementary to secondary.
- Establish and maintain effective learning climate in the school. Program classes within established guides to meet student needs.
- Supervise the guidance program to enhance individual student education and development. Establish guides for proper student conduct and maintain student discipline.
- Supervise the school’s teaching process.
- Plan, organize, and direct implementation of all school activities. Initiate, design, and implement programs to meet specific needs of the school
- Establish and maintain favorable relationship with local community groups and individuals to foster understanding and solicit support for overall school objectives and programs; to interpret Board policies and administrative directives; and to discuss and resolve individual student programs.
- Orient newly assigned staff members and assist in their development, as appropriate.
- Coordinate or supervise such support services as maintenance, security, food services, recreational programs, financial and accounting functions, library activities, and the like.
- Implement and supervise the school’s exceptional services program.
- Assume leadership in the direction of the school’s extracurricular activities.
- Evaluate and counsel all staff members regarding their individual and group performance.
- Prepare or supervise the preparation of reports, records, lists and all other paper work required or appropriate to the school’s administration.
- Participate in principal’s meetings, negotiation meetings, and such other meetings as are required or appropriate.
- Prepare and submit the school’s budgetary requests, and monitor expenditures of funds.
- Attend special events held to recognize student achievement, and attend school sponsored activities and functions.
- Maintain and control the various local funds gathered by student activities.
- Cooperate with college and university officials regarding teacher training and preparation.
- Work with various members of the Central Office Staff on school problems, such as transportation, special services, and the alike.
- Conduct staff meetings to keep members informed of policy changes, new programs, and the alike. Keep the superintendent informed of the school’s activities and problems.
- Keep abreast of changes and developments in the profession by attending professional meetings, reading professional journals and other publications, and discussing problems of mutual interest with others in the field.
- Any other duties assigned by the Superintendent
Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually
Terms of Employment: 232 Days with salary will being established by the Board of Education.
